Merchant Navy Day – 3 September

Each year on 3 September, communities across the United Kingdom come together to mark Merchant Navy Day, recognising the courage, dedication and sacrifice of merchant seafarers and the vital associated services that support them. Often referred to as the nation's "Fourth Service", the Merchant Navy has played a crucial role in sustaining the country through both peace and conflict, with countless seafarers risking – and many giving – their lives in service.

In Girvan, the community will once again gather at the Merchant Navy and Seafarers Memorial at Girvan Harbour to remember those who served at sea and those who have no grave but the sea. The commemorative service will provide an opportunity to reflect on the contribution made by merchant seafarers throughout history and to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Representatives from the Merchant Navy, RNLI, Coastguard and Royal British Legion will be in attendance, joining local residents and organisations in paying tribute to those whose service helped safeguard lives, communities and vital supply routes.

This special commemoration has been made possible through the partnership and collaboration of the Merchant Navy Association, Girvan Harbour Master, Girvan Community Council, Girvan & District Attractions, Girvan and District Great War Project, and Girvan Town Team. Together, these organisations are working to ensure that the service and sacrifice of merchant seafarers are remembered and honoured for future generations.

The service will begin at 5:00pm on Thursday 3 September at the Merchant Navy and Seafarers Memorial at Girvan Harbour. All are welcome to attend.
