Honouring Merchant Navy Day in Girvan

On Wednesday 3rd September, the Girvan community gathered at the Merchant Navy & Seafarers Memorial to pay tribute on Merchant Navy Day 2025. The service, which began at 5pm, brought together residents, representatives from local groups, and dignitaries to remember the vital role of the Merchant Navy, Seafarers, and Associated Services — and the many who made the ultimate sacrifice.

A moving service at the harbour

The ceremony began with a stirring welcome as local piper Angus Hamilton welcomed attendees to the event. Peter Henderson offered words of introduction, followed by thoughtful contributions from Councillor Alec Clark and Ritchie Conaghan of the Girvan and District Great War Project.

Reverend Adam Oellermann, of the Milestone Christian Fellowship, then led a heartfelt Prayer of Remembrance, before the Red Ensign was raised by Peter Henderson and Simon Voce, Harbour Master.

Representatives from local community organisations stepped forward to lay wreaths, ensuring the sacrifices of the Merchant Navy and seafarers were respectfully honoured. The service concluded with the Piper’s Lament and the hymn “Will Your Anchor Hold”, a fitting reminder of resilience and steadfastness.

Community reception

After the ceremony, attendees made their way to Girvan Community Garden, where tea, coffee, and cake were shared in a warm and welcoming reception supported by Julie and Jim. This provided an opportunity for reflection and conversation in a beautiful community setting.

Working together

This special service was made possible through the collaboration of Girvan Town Team, Girvan & District Attractions, Girvan Community Council, and the Girvan & District Great War Project, with support from the dedicated volunteers who gave their time to help the day run so smoothly.

Remembering their sacrifice

Merchant Navy Day holds a vital place in our national and local calendar, ensuring that the bravery, service, and sacrifice of merchant sailors and seafarers are never forgotten. As former Councillor Peter Henderson reflected:

“In a year when we commemorated VE80 Day and VJ80 Day it is important that the sacrifices of Merchant Sailors, Seafarers and vital Associated Services are not forgotten. Many paid the ultimate price and we will remember them.”

The event was both solemn and uplifting — a true demonstration of remembrance, respect, and community spirit in Girvan.
