Supporting an Accessible Promenade for All

Girvan Town Team is pleased to continue its support for Biosphere Bikes as part of our wider Postcards & Memories of Girvan project — a community-led initiative focused on improving access, inclusion and connection along Girvan’s promenade.

Through Coastal Communities Funding, this work has delivered a range of improvements designed to support inclusion and mobility, including dementia-friendly coloured benches, beach wheelchairs with a hoist, wheelchair-friendly picnic benches, and heritage lecterns featuring images of historic Girvan. Together, these elements help create a purposeful and accessible route along the promenade. For many, this has transformed a simple visit to the seafront into a meaningful and shared experience.

Crucially, the project has been shaped and strengthened by local partnership working, with support from South Ayrshire Council, Girvan & District Community Council, Girvan & District Attractions, GoGirvan, Biosphere Bikes, Girvan Youth Trust, Girvan & District Great War Project, and the wider community.

Working in Partnership with Biosphere Bikes

In recent years, Biosphere Bikes has played a vital role in bringing these improvements to life. Operating a seasonal seafront hire hub, the team provides free access to accessible bikes, trikes, beach wheelchairs and mobility equipment, allowing many residents and visitors to experience the promenade and beach in ways that would otherwise not be possible.

Recognising the importance of this service, Girvan Town Team has agreed to work in partnership with Biosphere Bikes to help ensure this specialist equipment is protected, maintained and safely available for public use over the coming years. This collaborative approach helps safeguard long-term access for those who rely on it most and supports an inclusive, active promenade.

We are proud to work alongside Biosphere Bikes and our many local partners, whose shared commitment helps keep Girvan’s promenade welcoming, active and accessible for everyone.

Biosphere Bikes shared their appreciation for this partnership, saying:
“Biosphere Bikes are delighted with the support we have received from Girvan Town Team in recognising the importance of the work we do in providing accessible equipment to allow everyone the opportunity to access both the promenade and beach.”

Lee Wilson, Trustee of Girvan Town Team, reaffirmed this shared commitment:
“The Town Team is delighted to continue to partner with Biosphere Bikes in making our Promenade and Beach safe and accessible — allowing all of our community and beyond the opportunity to enjoy this fantastic resource regardless of age and ability.”
