Just a short drive from Girvan, near the village of Dailly, lies a fascinating piece of South Carrick’s history: Dalquharran Castle. Surrounded by the beautiful Ayrshire countryside, this historic site has a little surprise for visitors — there are actually two castles to discover!
Two Castles, One Historic Estate
The remains at Dalquharran tell the story of two very different periods in Scottish history.
The older castle dates back to the 15th century, offering a glimpse into the area's medieval past. Its ruins are a reminder of a time when castles played an important role in the lives and landscapes of Scotland.
The second castle is quite different. Designed in the late 18th century by renowned Scottish architect Robert Adam, the grander Dalquharran Castle was built as an impressive country house. Adam was one of Scotland's most celebrated architects, known for his distinctive neoclassical style and elegant designs.
Although the later castle is now a ruin, its remaining walls still stand against the surrounding countryside, hinting at the grandeur of the estate in its heyday.
A Glimpse into South Carrick's Past
Dalquharran Castle is a wonderful reminder of just how much history can be found right on our doorstep. From medieval strongholds to elegant country houses, the two castles reflect changing architectural styles and ways of life over several centuries.
For those who enjoy exploring local history, discovering historic ruins or simply getting out into the countryside, Dalquharran is an interesting place to add to your South Carrick explorations.
Sometimes, the most fascinating local landmarks are the ones we pass without realising the stories they hold!
