Girvan Men’s Shed: Supporting Wellbeing Through Woodwork

Thanks to a £250 grant distributed by Girvan Town Team in partnership with the National Lottery Community Fund, the Girvan Men’s Shed is set to launch a new woodworking project aimed at improving wellbeing, supporting skill development, and contributing to the local community.

Established in 2016, the Girvan Men’s Shed supports the health and wellbeing of adults aged 18 and over living in Girvan and the surrounding areas. By offering a welcoming space where individuals can connect, collaborate, and stay active, the Shed plays a key role in tackling isolation and promoting positive mental health.

The new project will see members create handcrafted garden features—such as planters, wishing wells, and ornamental wheelbarrows—as well as eco-friendly items including bird boxes, hedgehog houses, and bee hotels. All items will be made at the Men’s Shed workshop, located at Girvan Football Club grounds.

Chair Mark Brown expressed his appreciation:

“We are very grateful for the support of the Town Team in funding our recent application for a woodworking project.”

The £250 grant has fully funded the cost of raw materials, including wood of various dimensions suited to the Shed’s planned creations. In addition to improving members' manual skills and mental health, the project will enable participation in local events where items may be sold to help support the Shed’s ongoing work.

Grant Opportunities for Local Groups

Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, Girvan Town Team has been able to support several local groups with grants of up to £500. The grants aim to support initiatives in Girvan and surrounding villages that promote grassroots community-building.
