Care about Girvan? We’re welcoming new Trustees

The work of the Girvan Town Team is always shaped by the people who give their time and ideas to support the town. As we look ahead to the next phase of our work, we’re keen to welcome new Trustees to join the board and help guide what comes next.

If you care about Girvan but aren’t sure what being a Trustee involves, this short Q&A aims to answer some common questions and help you decide whether it might be right for you.

What does a Trustee do on the Girvan Town Team?

Trustees help guide and support the work of Girvan Town Team so it can continue to benefit the town now and into the future.

As with all charities, Trustees provide governance in line with OSCR requirements. This helps ensure GTT is well run, financially sound, and focused on its charitable aims. In practical terms, this means having an overview of finances, contributing ideas, and supporting decisions about projects and activities in the town.

Over the years, Trustees have helped support a wide range of community initiatives, including the establishment of the Girvan & District Men’s Shed and the Cosy Spaces Winter and Summer Programmes. You will find many more examples of our work featured throughout this website.

Trustees don’t manage everything day to day — instead, they help shape direction, offer support, and ensure good decisions are being made for the benefit of the wider community.

How much time is usually involved?

Trustee meetings and Open Meetings take place once a month, except in January and July, and usually last around two hours. Trustee meetings are held online, while Open Meetings take place in the Girvan Town House.

Beyond meetings, Trustees can choose to contribute ideas, experience, or support in ways that suit their availability and interests. As GTT continues to develop, we’re particularly keen to hear from people who can offer fresh perspectives and help shape future priorities.

Do I need specific skills or experience?

You don’t need to be an expert or have held a similar role before.

What matters most is enthusiasm, a commitment to making a positive difference, and an interest in Girvan’s future. Local knowledge, lived experience, and different viewpoints are hugely valuable, and we’re keen to broaden the mix of voices around the table.

Support and guidance are in place, and Trustees are encouraged to contribute in ways that play to their own strengths.

What support is there for Trustees?

New Trustees are supported from the outset.

Each Trustee is offered an induction with the Project Coordinator to help them understand how GTT works and what the role involves. Ongoing support is available from the Project Coordinator and fellow Trustees, and decisions are made collectively as a board.

It’s very much a team effort, with everyone working together to support the town.

What’s the first step if I’m interested but not sure yet?

Taking the first step doesn’t mean making a big commitment straight away.

If you’re curious, you’re welcome to have an informal chat with the Project Coordinator, Roddy MacDonald, or come along to an Open Meeting to see how things work and ask questions. Open Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month (except January and July) at 6.30pm in the Girvan Town House

We’re actively looking to welcome new Trustees at the moment, and informal conversations are a great way to explore whether the role could be a good fit for you.

Interested in getting involved?

As Girvan Town Team continues its work in the community, now is a particularly good time to get involved and help shape what comes next.

If you’d like to find out more, please get in touch with Roddy MacDonald, Project Coordinator, or come along to an Open Meeting — we’d be very happy to welcome you.
