Building Connections at the Biosphere Proud Supporter Networker

On Wednesday 1st October, Girvan hosted the latest Biosphere Proud Supporter Networker, organised by the Galloway & Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere. This gathering brought together Biosphere supporters, providing an opportunity to connect, share ideas, and celebrate the values of sustainability and collaboration that lie at the heart of the Biosphere.

In his capacity as Secretary of the Girvan Business Association, Roddy MacDonald, Project Officer for Girvan Town Team, attended the event and shared some reflections

Morning Session – Biosphere Bikes

The day began with a visit to Biosphere Bikes, where attendees met representatives from the project and the Biosphere team. The group enjoyed a tour of the premises and had the chance to meet some of the talented young people whose enthusiasm and skills are driving this initiative forward.

Roddy praised the team’s achievements, noting:

“The progress made by Ann, Val, and the team over recent years is truly outstanding. A fantastic asset to our local community.”

Afternoon Session – Girvan Community Garden

The afternoon moved to the welcoming surroundings of Girvan Community Garden, where participants heard from a range of inspiring speakers:

  • Billie Jones, Project Manager at Glentrool Hive, shared the remarkable journey of transforming a former school into a vibrant community hub at the “wild heart of Galloway.”

  • Faith Hillier, Galloway & Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere Community Officer, gave an engaging update on new Biosphere Communities at Carsphairn and Dalrymple, as well as details of upcoming family-friendly events at Loch Ken, Woodroad Park, and Cumnock.

  • Jake McLaughlan, Galloway & Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere Business Engagement Officer, led a Q&A session.

Roddy shared a huge thank you to Jim and the team at Girvan Community Garden for hosting this part of the event — and for serving up delicious potato soup and sandwiches that warmed everyone on a blustery autumn day!

Building Connections

Events like the Biosphere Proud Supporter Networker highlight the strength of community partnerships across South Ayrshire and beyond. For the Girvan Business Association, it’s another opportunity to collaborate and strengthen links locally. By attending events like this, we ensure Girvan Business Association has a voice, builds valuable connections, and identifies opportunities that benefit both our community and local businesses.

Roddy concluded:

“The whole day, presided over by Tamara Fulcher, Biosphere Communications & Marketing Lead Officer, was truly inspiring. Going forward, Jake McLaughlan has agreed to attend the next meeting of the GIrvan Business Association which will take place before Christmas. I look forward to working with Jake and the fantastic Biosphere team in the future.”
