First Official Duty as Deputy Lieutenant

On Friday 8 May 2026, Girvan Town Team Member Ritchie Conaghan proudly undertook his first official engagement as a Deputy Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran, presenting Hugh Cook with a special 100th birthday card from Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

The presentation took place on the anniversary of VE Day, making the occasion even more poignant. Hugh, one of the area’s few remaining Second World War veterans, served in the Royal Navy after enlisting in 1944 and spent part of his service aboard the famous HMS Belfast.

Reflecting on the occasion, Ritchie said:

“It was such an honour to present one of the very few World War Two veterans left in the area his card from the King and Queen, and on the anniversary of VE Day too. Hugh told me he was in Sydney in Australia when VE Day was announced. I felt an immense sense of pride as my own Grandfather served in the Royal Navy in World War Two.”

During the visit, Hugh spent time sharing memories from his years of service, showing Ritchie photographs and stories from his time aboard HMS Belfast and his experiences in the Far East.

Born at Bilchristin Crossing near Culzean in 1926, Hugh later met his wife Ann, whom he married in Hurlford in 1950. Together they had one son, William. Although both Ann and William have sadly passed away, Hugh remains close to long-time neighbours and friends Martha and David.

Following the war, Hugh completed an engineering course and went on to work for Scottish Power for 30 years until his retirement.

His milestone birthday was celebrated in style at Doonbank House Care Home, where fellow residents and guests joined in marking the special day. Hugh spoke proudly of receiving the royal card, saying:

“This means so much to me.”

The celebrations also welcomed several distinguished visitors, including Claire Leitch, local councillor Drew Filson, Executive Warrant Officer Daniel Lound, Lieutenant Commander Barry Smith, representatives from the Royal British Legion Kilmarnock Branch, the Veterans Breakfast Club, SSAFA, Ayr Sea Cadets and Royal Marine Cadets, alongside many friends who have known Hugh over the years.

Everyone at Girvan Town Team extends their warmest congratulations to Hugh on reaching this remarkable milestone and thanks him for his service and contribution to the country!
